Fifty Shades of Moaning

Three years after its release, I finally succumbed to the call of Fifty Shades of Grey. From what I’d heard it was a porn-y version of Twilight and after having read all three books, I can confirm that statement.

The similarities were too many to ignore – nearly every character reminded me of someone from that dreadful vampire series. Anastasia Steele and Christian Grey are obviously another Bella and Edward. Grey’s parents and siblings remind me of the Cullen’s too much and, coincidentally, the three (Christian, Elliott and Mia) are adopted.

Not to say I didn’t enjoy the trilogy. But then, I was a hard-core fan of Twilight some years back as well. And now it annoys me. Sparkling vampires? But that’s a moan for another day.

My favourite character – and surprisingly this character was not based on a Twilight character, or not one I can think of anyway – is Taylor. Taylor is a kind of bodyguard to Grey, and later Ana, and he has this charm to him that makes him really lovable. Even though he doesn’t say or do much throughout the book, he’s always there, behind the scenes, and from what I’ve read about him, he seems like an awesome guy.

I want Taylor as my bodyguard.

I like the title of the book and the way it is explained throughout the series why Christian is “fifty shades”. The way EL James has built up his character is deep, disturbing and interesting. There’s just so many sides to him.

I’m looking forward to the movie, as I know millions of other women are around the globe. What I don’t like: the actors they used for the movies. Firstly, Rita Ora is NOT a Mia. Ashley Greene should have played that role since she reminds me of Alice from Twilight – the only character that I like. Yes, Ashley would be great for that role.

I want to watch the movie before making up my mind about the actors who play Christian and Ana, but I’m not convinced as yet. I imagined Ana plainer than Dakota Johnson and Christian hotter (and definitely taller) than Jamie Dornan.

Well only five months to go… not that I’m keeping track.
